I Let You Go

By Michael Tronnolone

I had a feeling something was coming.
So I put my foot down.
I didn't want us to go.
I didn't want to go.
But I didn't have enough evidence, even when it was all over your face.
I regret, I should have pushed back harder.

Left foot, right foot-- NOT THERE.
Jump over it.
And again.
And again.
Put this on, please.
And one more jump.
Sorry I forgot about this jump.
And this one.
And this--
I regret, I should have pushed back harder.

Your cloak of deceit can't hide you from me.
You're lucky I only want what's best for you.
I tried to fix your mistakes but you stopped me.
You wanted this.
But I didn't.
I live in a democracy where my vote doesn't count
and I'm watching the Titanic drift into the iceberg
and there's nothing I can do.
I regret, I should have pushed back harder.

I offered a solution,
and another
and another
and you didn't want to take them.
For my own sake,
I must forge my path anew,
learning from the lessons of your past.
With regret, I let you go.
